Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I install a pet door?

Pikes Peak Pet Doors can install a pet door in a Door, through a Wall AND In Glass.

What Pet Doors do you sell?

I sell Hale Pet Doors. I am a Certified Dealer and Installer of Hale Pet Doors.

Will you install other brands of pet doors?

Yes. I can install any pet door.

Are the pet doors drafty?

No. Standing next to the pet door on a standard winter day it does not feel cold. All the pet doors come with double flaps. The flaps come with a heavy pile weatherstripping and alnico magnets.

Can I get new replacement flaps?

Yes. The flaps, weatherstripping and magnets are all replaceable. Hale Pet Door has been around since 1985.

What brand of pet door do you recommend?

I’ve been very impressed with the Hale Pet Door since the beginning. The construction is BIG dog durable with all aluminum frame and steel reinforced corners. As well as the aluminum tunnel on a Wall model makes a huge difference when comparing to other brands that are plastic or a thinner gauge frame that tend to twist. Also all the models come standard with double flaps and a security panel. I’ve replaced the flaps on several pet doors that are over 15 years old and it’s like their brand new again!

Can you install a pet door into glass?

Yes. Typically the In Glass model pet doors are installed in the slider of a patio door. I replace the glass with a new piece that has a cut out for the pet door to go through. Your patio door will fully open, lock and work as intended with the pet door.

What about the old glass?

You can keep it - as technically the In Glass pet door is reversible compared to going through a wall or door. Or I can dispose of the old glass at no charge.

Where should I put the pet door?

It comes down to wherever you have space. Many pet doors end up in the kitchen in the wall right next to the slider or if there is not enough wall space they end up in the glass of the slider. All the models have the same flap and Security Panel configuration meaning they all operate the same way.

What size pet door do I need?

It’s best to get a measurement of your dog, while standing, from the floor to the top of their back. There are a dozen different sizes of pet doors so a measurement takes out any guessing. TIP: have your dog stand next to you and mark your own leg where your dog’s back is then measure the height from the floor. It is much easier than chasing your dog around with a tape measure.

Will the pet door fit?

Most average sized pets and pet doors will need 14” of width on the flat wall surface. The height is less of a concern but you do need to have about double the height to allow for the security panel to slide vertically to be removed. There are options to install under window sills or other obstacles.

What else do you do?

I have always been a handyman kinda guy. I have probably fixed a little bit of everything, But I do like building decks, fences and dog runs and usually do a few of those projects each year. It doesn’t hurt to ask.
